Space Exploration Medal

Description

Obverse. On a gold disc 1 ½” (3.81cm) in diameter, between six polestars, three to the left and three to the right, three stylized inwardly arched vertical contrails issuing from base, the top of the contrails encircled by a ring; all within a laurel wreath, ending at the top of the contrails, a stylized three-pointed star; surmounted at center a horizontally place unfurled scroll bearing the inscription “NASA”; all Gold.

Symbolism. The elongated three-pointed star followed by contrails alludes to the Astronaut symbol and conveys the launch of space craft and the concentrated power behind it; both the literal launch as well as the combined efforts of the organization to accomplish its goals. The orbital ring conveys continuity and repeatability, signifying the ability to maintain and sustain complex operations and execute similar missions in the future. The space craft and contrails passing through the ring emphasizes Astronauts leaving the atmosphere and entering outer space.

Reverse. A hyperspace star field displaying in center a stylized engraving plate, all within a laurel wreath; surmounted in base a horizontally placed unfurled scroll bearing a stacked inscription “SPACE EXPLORATION”, all Gold.

Symbolism: The perspective view of the stars with contrails conveys motion and exploration. The Astronaut’s name will be engraved upon the pad honoring their place amongst the stars.

Ribbon. The black field represents space, blue alludes to Earth, and white connotes cosmic light.
